Upon picking your first Pokemon, you are also shocked to find “Ghost” in your lineup.

Upon selecting “New Game”, the game starts with Professor Oak speech.

After selecting your starter, if you look at your Pokémon, in addition to either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle another Pokémon – “GHOST”.

The Pokémon is at level 1. It has the sprite of the Ghosts that are encountered in Lavender Tower before obtaining the Sliph Scope.

It has one attack – “Curse”.

Defending Pokémon are not able to attack Ghost – they are “too scared”.

When the move “Curse” is used in battle, the screen cuts to black. The cry of the defending Pokémon can be heard, but it’s distorted and played at a lower pitch.

The battle screen then reappears, and the defending Pokémon is gone.

If used in a battle against a trainer, when the Pokéballs representing their Pokemon appear in the corner, they have one fewer Pokéball!

The implication is that the other Pokémon has “died”.

Even stranger is that after defeating a trainer and seeing “Red received $200 for winning!”, the battle commands appear again. If you select “Run”, the battle ends as it normally does. You can also select Curse. If you do, upon returning to the overworld, the trainer’s sprite is gone. After leaving and reentering the area, the spot where the trainer would have been will be replaced with a tombstone!

The game changes quite a bit after defeating the Elite Four. After viewing the Hall of Fame, which consists of Ghost and a couple of very under leveled Pokémon, the screen cuts to black.

A box appears with the words “Many years later…” It then cut to Lavender Tower. An old man is standing, looking at tombstones. You realize this man is your character.

The man moves at only half of your normal walking speed. You no longer have any Pokémon with you, not even Ghost, who up to this point had been impossible to remove from your party through depositing in the PC. The overworld is entirely empty – there are no people at all. There are still the tombstones of the trainers that you used Curse on, however.
